If these suggestions don't get you much farther, you'll probably want to post some details about your system (video card, amount of RAM on the video card, which version of Debian, which version of X, any WWarnings or EErrors in /var/log/XFree86.0.log, etc).
Sorry, I'm not yet an advanced Linux desktop user. This is what I found:
Installed: Debian testing
Linux version 2.4.26-1-686 ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 3.3.3 (Debian 20040401)) #1 Sat May 1 18:04:05 EST 2004
lspci: VGA compatible controller: Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G400 AGP (rev 05)
/var/log/XFree86.0.log:
<snip>
SetClientVersion: 0 7
(II) Open APM successful
(==) MGA(0): Write-combining range (0xf2000000,0x2000000)
(II) MGA(0): vgaHWGetIOBase: hwp->IOBase is 0x03d0, hwp->PIOOffset is 0x0000
(==) MGA(0): Default visual is TrueColor
(II) MGA(0): [drm] bpp: 32 depth: 24
I don't see any indication of how much video RAM you have; I think the first thing I'd do is drop my color depth from 24 to 16; you can do this by running "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86".
