My experience says 5mins are ok for ext2. My machines with different kernels (2.4.x), ext2 and just a few GBytes of used diskspace take 15-20mins for a fsck (CPUs have 500-1000 MHz, using fast UW2 SCSI systems). This is why i switched to journalling filesystems on newer systems.
