I feel like a moron for asking but I have recently ditched slackware
and am new to Debian.

Thanks !!!!

Jed,

I'm replying to your linux.debian.user newsgroup post. But I'm emailing this to the mail list, [EMAIL PROTECTED] . More readers will see it on the mail list. The newsgroup is only a one-way gateway from the mail list.

I'm no linux expert, but why not apt-get install your driver? apt-get will automatically stop/start services for you.

And can't you stop X as root with this from a virtual console?

/etc/init.d/xfree86-common stop

Others here will give you the real deal, I'm sure. ;) You might also post your kernel (uname -a) and say what you've attempted and searched for already. For example, the archives have recent discussions of nvidia problems on the 2.6 kernel, iirc.

Regards.
