This is indeed a PAM issue. My system behaves after I did this: dpkg --force-all -P libpam-runtime dpkg --force-all -P libpam-modules rm -rf /etc/pam.d rm -rf /lib/security dpkg -i libpam-runtime_0.72-35_i386.deb dpkg -i libpam-modules_0.72-35_i386.deb Thank you!
