l2tp recommendations

I note that the latest tarball at www.l2tpd.org is two years old, and 
the roaring penguin version mentioned on the site  isn't at RP.

The major reason _to_ use it are that the Boss's OSX laptop has it. The 
alternative is to setup GNU tools on my laptop and build openvpn.

Does anyone have any experience to offer regarding l2tp implementations 
on Linux?
