In this section of your X11 configuration file:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Default Mouse"
Check for these lines:
Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
They work for a Trackman Marble Plus trackball.
