Not really a solution, but:

I (don't tell anyone else) have on my "joost" homedirectory
a subdir that's only readable to "joost". in that dir I've got
a shell that's setuid root: if for some reason root cannot
login, I usually am able to execute that shell.

Not really the solution you're after on a secure system, though!
