The perms on /var/spool/mail should be:

frodo:~$ ls -la /var/spool/mail
total 2
drwxrwsr-t 2 root mail 1024 Nov 2 19:56 ./
drwxr-xr-x 15 root root 1024 Oct 18 01:34 ../
-rw-rw---- 1 andy mail 0 Nov 2 19:59 andy

Anything else will cause problems.

Andy.
