Unmount the disk with problems, and run "/sbin/e2fsck -f /dev/hd??". Fill in the device name as appropriate. Check for bad memory (I know, that's shotgunning the problem, but it turns up a lot) and other hardware problems.
Indeterminate behavior is generally an indication of a hardware problem.
