Try getting the latest version of both the kernel-source and make-kpkg. I had this problem, and managed to hack around it, but I don't remember which file it is that had the problem. It's the file that processes the config file and there are two sections in there---one accepts and validates a hex number and one accepts and validates a decimal number.
