Mike -- Do you have write permissions to that directory (ls -ld /home)? Is it a separate partition or on a separate disk? If so, check out the /etc/fstab entry for /home, and if you see "ro" or something along the lines of "read-only", remove it. I'm very interested what the problem turns out to be. Please let me know.
