If it's hitting your disk every minute, and you have virtual-dev, you probably haven't killed enough. Be sure to get the log daemon, I guess you got "cron" and "at". Don't run a name daemon, they do a traversal of their database once a minute that generally hits virtual memory. Maybe you don't have enough RAM and the system goes virtual anyway.
