Is there a way to find this out ahead of time?
Yes, there is a way. dselect uses dpkg to find out about dependencies. With the dpkg --info <package.deb> command you will get a lot of info, among which a line starting with `Depends'. This line will tell you what the package depends on. Eric Meijer -- E.L.
