I had exactly the same error message when I was trying to use dselect the first time with ftp.debian.org.....tried one of the other mirrors and everything seemed to work.....weird. Weirder still I later tried ftp.debian.org and it worked!
I must have been doing something wrong initially but I can't imagine what. You might try one of the other mirrors though.... http://www.debian.org/misc/README.mirrors Good luck.
