G'day folks, I've recently acquired myself an oldish 486 laptop, which I'm in the process of installing Debian on, and I'd like a little advice.
I've successfully managed to complete the base install (which, BTW, I think was considerably easier than RedHat 4.2 which I have on my desktop system!) using the 8 Install Floppies. These were taken of an Infomagic CD with Debian 1.3.1, and so far it has worked pretty flawlessly. Because I'd like to do a little more than cruise around the file system and check out the differences b/w redhat and debian, I'd obviously like to install some of the packages. I've got myself a PCMCIA ethernet card, and I figure I can share the CD using NFS on redhat (which I haven't worked out how to do yet, but one thing at a time...), mount it on the laptop, and install the packages from there (yes, I did remember to include the NFS module). Here is where I am a little stuck. [quote] Select the Configure Device Drivers menu item and look for devices that are on your system. Configure those device drivers, and they will be loaded whenever your system boots. If you want to install the base system via NFS you must load and configure the driver module for your network card. There is a menu selection for PCMCIA device drivers, but you need not use it . Once your system is installed, you can install the pcmcia-cs package. This detects PCMCIA cards automaticaly, and configures the ones it finds. It also copes with hot-plugging the cards while the system is booted - they will all be configured as they are plugged in, and de-confugured when you unplug them. [end quote] The above is from the install.html on the CD, but I can't for the life of me find the bit to install the PCMCIA drivers from. Maybe I'm blind, but if it is there, might someone be able to suggest a specific place to look? Failing that, what is the easiest way to enable the PCMCIA support? Would it be to find the pcmcia-cs package on the CD, copy that to a floppy, and install it from a floppy to the laptop, the proceed from there? Any other suggestions? Thanks for your help damon (PS. It's late, I'm tired, and I suspect I'm rambling a little... if I am, please forgive me!) ======== Damon Muller ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Web Page: www.sub.net.au/~tr It's not a sense of humor.
