This is what i did - setting up my PII as a PPro. Never had any problems. But some Kernel-Makefiles showed a Pentium (only) config *after* i tried to configure as PPro. I manually reset this to PPro - no problems. My machine is running continously with two to three Users logged in localy. BTW compiling programms for 486 works, no need for 386. ;)
