You also need the right settings in host.conf . Compare mine with yours.
$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
domain netcologne.de
nameserver 194.8.194.83
nameserver 194.8.194.70
nameserver 194.8.194.71
$ cat /etc/host.conf
order hosts, bind
multi on
