Did you make sure to make a ppp connection first? You've got to be
on-line when you run dselect, or else you'll need to run diald also.

This means the directory on the ftp site that is the root of all debian
stuff. For some sites, this is /pub/debian, others it's /debian,
others still it's something wacky like /pub/linux/dists/other/debian/
but you can figure this out pretty easily.
