Doesn't have to run as root, mine looks like this:

  ~> more .fetchmailrc 
  defaults proto pop3 smtphost localhost
  poll mailhost1 user jesse password password1
  poll mailhost2 user jesse password password2

I make it poll every 10 minutes like this:

  fetchmail -d 600
