Hey,

It's been suggested to me (a few times...) to compile a custom Kernel.
Now being a Newbie, I am very leery of this. I had downloaded the ded
kernel image once and when selecting it to install, it gave me lots of
warnings....I got scared and stopped.

First, is this a proper way to install a custom kernel on a functioning
linux system or is this just a way to upgrade a kernel image...??

Secondly, if I do decide to hack around with the deb package will this
totally F*** my system leaving me to start from scratch -- I built my
Debian from total ftp downloads - no CDs! I spent a month finding and
downloading everything! I don't want to go there again. At least not so
soon!!
