Depends on where you use them :-) The typical usage is: " string with variable substitutions ' literal string (suppress substitutions) ` execute the command and use the result So: 'pwd' gives you those three characters, while `pwd` gives you the current directory. These work in bash and perl, and probably most of the shells. In LaTeX, they are left and right quotes, so you should quote like `this' or like ``this'' (" is not used at all). > and what are they called ?
