My thanks to Daniel and Brian for their posts. Well, there was nothing mysterious about the solution, was there :o) <Begin face-saving mode> I guess what threw me is that I hadn't changed any mime types or applications settings, so I supposed some arcane file had gotten corrupted. Ah well.
