The README.gz file in /usr/doc/gs has a 1996 copyright, so that sounds about right.
To get around dselect not handling versioned provides with magicfilter/gs-aladdin, I downgraded from gs-aladdin to gs. The hpdj driver in gs gives errors (however dj500 seems to work fine). I don't know if this is really a gs 5.10 problem or just a fluke with that driver.
