MetroX support got back to me. (Apparently they do that at the end of the day. I spent my time waiting playing with gcal -- i'm kicking myself over the $60 i spent on Daytimer's calendar program, especially after configuring a2ps to print to the DayTimer paper size....)
If anyone else has this problem, first when startx'ing into the
default root window manager,
# xhost +
charmingly insecure, that. Then
# xrdb -remove
Voila, then you can run the second iteration of
configX.
