Yes, have swap; and yes, was running Netscape. I had been able to run dselect/select several times already during this particular session while Netscape was running, so I didn't really suspect Netscape of being the problem. At any rate, everything's working fine now after a reboot (not to "fix" things "a la" Windows, but for another reason). I just now ran dselect/select and have two Netscape Navigator windows open and the Netscape Mail window open and this Netscape Message Composer window open; if the problem resurfaces, I'll shut down all of Netscape and try it and see what happens.
