It has 2048K of ram, which previously was detected. The XF86Config files matched a backup I had made several months ago so nothing changed there. There weren't any X changes in yesterday's potato update, so that isn't the problem. I tried adding a line "VideoRam 2000" and X would start, but it showed several images at various places on the screen instead of just one. SVGATextMode doesn't seem to have any problem. I have another card (S3 Trio) I will try--possibly it's a hardware problem. Thanks for all the responses.
