I haven't used a kernel package in a long time. I dl my kernel source from www.kernel.org because the kernels are much more current there. You don't need to install those, just unpack them. If you want to use a debian package, then go into dselect and find the kernel source for 2.2.x (I think 2.2.1 is the newest they have in slink, but could be wrong). Just for a point of comparison, 2.2.10 is out.
