I've recently done a clean wipe/reinstall of Debian on an old Sager 486 laptop. Before the rebuild my dialup worked fine; now I have a couple of issues.
First, the PCMCIA stuff is not starting automatically. I don't really understand the bootup process and modules, etc, but I have figured out that I can manually run "/etc/init.d/pcmcia stop" followed by "/etc/init.d/pcmcia start" and the "pon" command then works and I can dial-up. But this then introduces the second problem. About ten seconds or so after doing the "start", I get a screenload of what looks like an error starting a getty along with the one-line explanation of syntax for the command. Then at the bottom I get an error to the effect of "INIT ID 'S' respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes". Then about 5 minutes later it happens again. If I do a "/etc/init.d/pcmcia stop", the problem goes away (of course, so does my ability to dial-up, also). I don't know enough about what files/logs/etc the list readers need to see, but I'd appreciate any help on getting these two issues fixed.
