This isn't allowed by the ftp-server (recursive getting) -- the feature needs to be implemented in the ftp-client. Standard ftp does not do this, but ncftp does, and I would hope lftp and cftp and some of those others do as well. xftp I think does too, but I can't recall if that is packaged for debian or not. <shrug>
