In X, cut and paste is handled via ICCCM (Interclient communication mechanism).
 There are "atoms" you request, etc.  Fish around for the ICCCM doc and it will
be apparent.  Should be with the X docs, if not it is on the web.

Console cut n paste is only done via gpm.  Dunno if you can get to it.
