can't find hard drive

After making a boot floppy and restarting my computer.  The install program 
says that
it couldn't find any hard drives and wants to do a network install.  ?!??!? 
I have SCSI drives
 on a Adaptec 2940 controller.  Any ideas?  Can the current kernel detect 
it?  I also have
 mandrake and I didn't have this problem.
