Everything works now. I was getting the error while using the Blackbox window manager, but when I went back to look at Gnome later in the day, the problem mysteriously rectified itself.
I was able to start the spooled slrn just fine in Gnome. I guess going back to Gnome let it take care of what ever it had to do?
