I told it to? I just added it to the list of resolutions that I wanted to be supported via xf86config for each color depth. I hand edited the /etc/X11/XF86Config file to make 32bpp my default color depth, and voila.
The potato SVGA X-Server works just fine with this (I'm running potato as well, and have been for quite a while). The only reason I switched to the one from 3dfxgamers.com is for a few dgamouse bugfixes that effect things like Q3. Other than that, they appear to be pretty much the same.
