that seems to have got me some way along so thanks!

Does anyone have the standard apache entry for /etc/init.d/apcahe? I deleted
that and it seems that kills all attempts to repair apache.

More quotes:

Setting up apache (1.3.9-10) ...
update-rc.d: /etc/init.d/apache: file does not exist
dpkg: error processing apache (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
 Errors were encountered while processing:
  libopenldap-runtime
   libopenldap1
    apache
    E: Sub-process returned an error code (1)

    and

Preparing to replace bash 2.03-1 (using .../archives/bash_2.03-2_i386.deb)
...
    Unpacking replacement bash ...
    dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/bash_2.03-2_i386.deb
(--unpack):
trying to overwrite `/etc/profile', which is also in package base-files
