I use both apt-get and dselect. If I want to browse what's available, or hunt down the name of a package I want to install, then I use dselect. If I already know the package's name, then I use apt-get. If I had a high-speed Internet connection, then I probably wouldn't use dselect. I'd just use apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. But I don't, so I'm now spending time with dselect and weeding out unnecessary applications. > But now I want to install X, so is "apt-get -d install X" right? Nope. Although I've thought that something like that would be a nice feature. You'll probably want to use dselect and fish around for the right packages. You should also hit the XFree site and look up your video card; it'll tell you which server to download. -- David J.
