Well, I went to Network Solutions and got msn's IP
number and then fired up pppconfig (which did not again ask me for the
DNS)
I used emacs to edit in the IP numbers in
/etc/resolv.conf
As far as I can tell, after entering in pon msn,
the system never dialed out. That seemed to be confirmed by a quick exit in
/var/log/messages
