Another (possibly) relevant point: I can connect from the Linux box using WINS names with smbclient. The problem appears to only be with things like ping, telnet, etc. So it's "normal" name resolution rather than WINS-specific stuff. Don't know if this narrows the problem down at all.... Paul.
