I reckon I'll just have to log out/log back in. (Actually, for now, I've just Alt-F2'd and started a new session, and then started a new X session on the next display -- I'm in the dialout group on the second X session, so I can just Alt-Ctrl-Fx back and forth between the two X sessions until I get around to shutting down session #1.)
