I don't know if the two are related, but... If you upgraded to a 2.2.x kernel (the default potato is 2.2.14), then there should be a script in /etc/init.d called devpts.sh. It should ``mount'' /dev/pts and make sure /dev/ptmx and /dev/pts exist. If you haven't rebooted, you can probably just run this script and it'll fix the Unix 98 ptys issue.
