hi
...
you need to configure your network if you haven't already done so ... the files
you need to edit are:
/etc/init.d/network &
/etc/hostname
I also
find that sometimes my PCMCIA card isn't detected @ startup (and therefore no
indication of network connectivity on card). I find that taking out the card
& reinserting it after you've logged in usually fixes the problem .... I'm
sure there's a better way but this works for me.
regards
Andrew

Subject: What did I do wrong?Installed debian from floppies on my IBM thinkpad 600E laptop.
Read all about "installing on Laptops" and decided to give ita go anyway.....found that the PCMCIA card that I have formy network is on the "newly supported" PCMCIA cards. In myinitial search it appeared that it was either not supportedor "implemented, but not officially supported" if there issuch a distinction.
Anyway, the README that I eventually got to after tracking downinformation on this card (Xircom cardBus 10/100 + 56Modem),indicated that it should already be supported in the baseload - or words to that effect.
Well, I've loaded up to the base system and now I can't seethe PCMCIA device or al least not the network. I triedusing "modconf" to add all the PCMCIA pieces and they allindicated that they were installed correctly - now what?
I still do not get an indication that my ethernet isactive.
'ifconfig' only shows the "lo" interface - so I presume the"eth0" interface will appear when my network card isproperly installed?
I know I'm missing a lot here - so I hope someone can helpwith a few simple suggestions on what to look for and/ortry?
TIA!
Kevin Smith
