When X (and xdm) starts, you can still get to the virtual consoles by hitting Ctrl-Alt-F1 through Ctrl-Alt-F6 (depending on which console you want). To get back to X, go to the seventh virtual console by hitting Ctrl-Alt-F7 (or just Alt-F7).
