[You've had a lot of answers, and started quite a tangential discussion,
but I do have something else to add.]

IIRC, lame can directly read Vorbis files, so it can presumably produce
mp3s directly from your Vorbis files.  No idea if it's smart enough to
add ID3 tags or whatever, though.
