If you want to disable it temporarily, you can do a 'rm /etc/rc2.d/S99xdm' (assuming that you are booting in run level 2 (which is Debian's default)). To reenable it: 'ln -s /etc/init.d/xdm /etc/rc2.d/S99xdm'.
