Installing XFree86 3.x changes the symlink to point to itself. For this video card, 3.x supports 8 and 16 bit color; 4.x only supports 8 bit color. Neither supports 24 bit color, though the card is capable of it. The card can't be run at the highest dot clock speeds without tearing and other artifacts. I remember that from the old days.
