It seems as if you don't have everything installed Are you on woody? IIRC 4.02 moved into woody some days ago. Try apt-get install task-x-window-system to be sure that you have everything. When I installed from http://people.debian.org/~branden (before it moved into woody), not everything was installed automatically and I had to apt-get install some package explicitly (sorry, don't remember which one it was).
