I am converting my firewall machine to a Debian installation. I am in the process of removing unwanted services so as to lock down the machine against intrusions.
I am trying to remove portmap, but this program does not seem to follow the pattern for other programs. With other program I simply "dpkg --purge" them. There is no listing of portmap ("dpkg --list" does not show portmap) so this approach does not work. Next I looked at removing the symbolic link from /etc/rcS.d to portmap so that it would not be started. Upon reading the documentation for the update-rc.d script, it seems that this is the next best approach. However, to do this, I have to use the '-f' or "force" flag. I am hesitating to do this until I get some feedback from the community. Question --> what is the best approach to stop portmap from running on a Debian system? Thanks! Randy
