I have no idea what fixed the problem. Of course, there have been a number of package updates since 04/11/01 when I originally posted a problem with StarOffice 5.2 on my system. Nevertheless, the problem seems to be fixed now. I can modify my existing StartOffice documents without a problem under the present unstable release of Debian.
