XF86 selects the first mode listed as its default mode - in this case "640x480". It then will have a virtual screen (of 1280x1024), but only show you the top left hand corner like this: ---------------------------- | | | | | | | 640x480 | | | | | | | | -------------- | | | | | | 1280x1024 | | | | | ---------------------------- If you don't want that, just reverse the order of the modes in your config file, ie: Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" You can also switch between resolutions using Ctrl+Alt+Keypad-Plus and Ctrl+Alt+Keypad-Minus.
