simplest/safest way...
- save your own data to another disk...
- coppy off /etc and your deb package list

- reformat your disk partitions correctly...

- reinstall from backup...
- done
the harder way...
- why are you swapping / and /usr ????
- due to partition size problems ???

- you got a problem.....
remember that / is lots of directories...
and you cannot copy stuff into / while its running
especially its not a plug-in replacement for whats already there
copying/moving /usr to / will break the running box
so you need to boot from a new box first
-- too much work to boot from a different system...
-- mount your original target disk
-- move the data around
- copy / to temp-space
- copy /usr to temp-space-user
- repartition or fix the problem on teh original disk
- copy from temp-space back to /
- copy from temp-space-usr back to /usr

- did you forget anything ???
( if you did....you're dead when you try to boot it )
-- make a botable floppy or fix lilo so it boot properly
-- shutdown...
-- move the new target disk into place like it was before the swap
-- boot it and see if it works, keep your fingers crossed...
