Actually, I just had a similar problem tonight when I tried to recompile my kernel and forgot to include the SCSI kernel module for my Adaptec card. Did you get all the correct modules in your kernel for your hardware?
Also, from the message about appending a correct root boot option, you may want to check your lilo.conf file and see what your root= is set to. Typically, it's /dev/hda1 for ide drives and /dev/sda1 for scsi drives. (assuming your root directory is on your first drive) If you have a boot floppy, you should be able to boot up and check your lilo.conf as well as recompile your kernel if you need to. I'm fairly new to Debian as well, so I'm sure if I got any of this wrong, someone will correct me. :) --kurt -----Original Message----- From: Matt Jones [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, July 16, 2001 10:48 PM To: [email protected] Subject: kernel 2.4.6 I have a problem. I have been trying to get the recent version of the kernel into my box. I am a relatively new user so I have not done this before. I used a kernel-update guide and followed all the directions and everything worked fine until I rebooted. When I did it gave me the following message: ... VFS: Cannot open root device "800" or 08:00 Please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:00 I have not changed much in lilo.conf except the name of the new kernel, but the system can no longer find something or I have done something wrong. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
